Mughal-e-Azam is a tribute to the imagination, hard work and lavishness of its maker. For its grandeur, its beauty and the performances of the artistes it should be a landmark in Indian films. The film has become like an epic now.

For the battle sequence, 2,000 camels, 4,000 horses and 8,000 troops were used, many of them soldiers on loan from the Indian Army. This was arranged through special permission through the Indian Ministry of Defence-a rare occurrence today. The soldiers came from the Jaipur regiment of the Indian army.

Mughal-e-Azam is the love story between a commoner Anarkali (Madhubala) and Prince Salim (Dilip Kumar), the son of Mughal emperor Akbar (Prithviraj Kapoor).

It took 10 years to make the epic film and it cost Rs 15 million to make Mughal-e-Azam. In today's times, it would have cost Rs 2 billion.

Mughal-E-Azam is the first black-n-white film to be colourised for a big screen release. The voice track restoration has been done in Hollywood and the background score, effects and music track have been digitally re-recorded.

# The song "Pyar Kiya To Darna Kiya" cost Rs. 10 million, was written and re-written 105 times by the lyricist, Shakeel Badayuni, before the music director, Naushad, could approve of it; it was shot in the renowned Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors); and in those days of sound recording, editing and mixing, as there was no way to provide the reverberation of sound, Naushad had Lata Mangeshkar sing the song in a studio bathroom. The song rattled the conservative Indian social apparatus of the 60's, and had a profound influence on the Indian youth.
